The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Gary McDonald can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Condolence From: Joan Krochmal
Condolence: Gary was a good friend of my husband, Paul Krochmal, who was a physician in NYC and worked with Gary. I was very fortunate to have met him several times. I am so sorry for your loss and hope that Gary is now resting in peace and sharing stories with Paul.

Condolence From: Jim Martin
Condolence: Gary McDonald was a true superhero, dedicating his life to serving others. His life of service began in 1972 with the NYPD's Auxiliary Rescue Squad. From there, he moved to the Yonkers Volunteer ambulance where he was elected Chief of Operations. Here he met his future bride, Judy. Gary was hired by the NYC Emergency Medical Service in 1978 and 9 months later completed training as a paramedic. He went on to become a Paramedic instructor at Bellevue Hospital, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience with his students and peers. During the two week transit strike I n 1980, Gary was a member of the EMS Moped Squad and was credited with saving the life of a man who collapsed from heart failure on the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral. He received a citation from Mayor Ed Koch for his efforts. Gary transferred to the NYPD in the late 1980's, working patrol in the 44th Precinct and then undercover in the narcotics unit. He was appointed detective and then promoted to Sergeant. After a mandatory stint in Internal Affairs, Gary commanded the 40 Precinct Detective Squad until his retirement. Gary was a student of science, a lover of science fiction and a huge fan of the movies and television. But he was a real life superhero to all those who knew or worked with him. A dedicated son, husband, father and grandfather, Gary was a true champion of truth, justice and the American way. God speed you Gary on your journey through the heavens.

Condolence: I'm so sorry to hear about the death of your family member. In times like this, comfort is much needed from the Bible. John 5:28, 29 states: "do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". What a wonderful hope for the future Evan look forward to- seeing your loved one being resurrected to life, living on the earth under perfect conditions. My condolences to you and your family at this time
