Richard LePore Obituary

Richard "Rick" LePore, age 78, passed away on January 31, 2024 after a short illness. Rick was born on January 21, 1946 in Mt. Vernon, NY. He was predeceased by a sister Susan LePore Garbett of Elmira, NY and is survived by a brother Philip LePore of Albany, NY. Among his friends and family, Rick was well known for his athletic prowess. Early on he achieved black belt status under Master Jhoon Rhee of Korea and was victorious in multiple martial arts competitions. His training regimen led to him competing in marathons. He qualified for and ran 4 Boston & NYC Marathons where he was a top 10% finisher in his age class! He would tell you his niece Ann and nephew John were the special joys in his life. They were the children he didn't have. He loved them dearly and they loved him right back! Rick found enormous satisfaction in also becoming an accomplished racing driver. He won numerous EMRA time trial events and went on to becoming a racing driver coach at Watkins Glen and other tracks in the northeast. It was where he also enjoyed the company of his brother Phil and nephew John. Both shared his enthusiasm for motorsport. Rick, was a lifelong Westchester County resident. He retired from IBM. He also served 6 years in the US Naval Reserve. He was widely traveled having been to Europe, Asia, India and Oceania. He was especially adventuresome, too! Went to where bungie jumping originated in New Zealand and took the plunge! At home he volunteered with Westfair Rides to transport seniors to medical appointments. Rick enjoyed cooking, entertaining friends and following TV motorsports. He also enjoyed the warm weather and would often spend winter on the beach in Florida. In accordance with his wishes, Rick's ashes will be spread along the shoreline paths where he ran and the locations where he most enjoyed the company of his friends and family. A celebration of his life is scheduled to take place on April 24, 2024 at the Yannantuono Funeral Home in Fleetwood (Mt. Vernon, NY) from 11:30 to 1:30pm. Rick, who was an insulin dependent diabetic and afflicted in late life with inclusion body myositis, a degenerative muscle disease, has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Joslyn Diabetes Center and Johns Hopkins Myositis Center in Baltimore.
